A neck pain chiropractor is a healthcare professional who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of neck pain. Chiropractors use a variety of techniques, including chiropractic neck adjustment, soft tissue therapy, and exercise rehabilitation to help relieve neck pain and restore function. Chiropractic care is originally based on the belief that the body has the ability to heal itself, and that spinal manipulation can facilitate this process (1).
Chiropractic treatment has been shown to be an effective treatment for neck pain. A systematic review of scientific studies found that chiropractic care via Chiropractic thrust manipulation was more effective than non-thrust mobilisation for reducing pain and improving function in patients with neck pain (2). Another study found that chiropractic care was more effective than medication for reducing pain and disability in patients with acute and subacute neck pain (3).
Spinal manipulation involves applying a controlled force to the joints of the spine to improve spinal function and reduce pain (1). Soft tissue therapy involves applying pressure to the muscles and other soft tissues to reduce tension and improve range of motion (5). Meanwhile, exercise rehabilitation involves designing a program of exercises to help strengthen the muscles and improve function (5).
Poor posture can put a strain on the muscles and joints of the neck, leading to pain and discomfort. By maintaining good posture and practicing ergonomics, individuals can help prevent neck pain. A study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that neck stretching exercises were effective in reducing neck pain and improving range of motion in individuals with chronic neck pain (6). In addition, a review article found that chiropractic care, including exercises and stretches, was effective in improving neck pain and function in individuals with cervical spine degeneration (7).
Shoulder pain is often related to neck pain. The muscles and joints of the neck and shoulders are closely interconnected, and pain in one area can often lead to pain in the other. Chiropractors can evaluate and treat shoulder pain through a combination of spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, exercises, and stretches. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation therapy and exercise, was effective in improving shoulder pain and function in individuals with rotator cuff tendinopathy (8). By addressing shoulder pain, chiropractors can help alleviate both conditions caused by the underlying musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders that contribute to the pain.
The article discusses the causes of acute and chronic neck pain and suggests that chiropractic care may be more effective for acute neck pain, while other treatments may be more effective for chronic neck pain (2) .
Neck pain can be a debilitating condition that can greatly affect an individual's quality of life. Chiropractic care can help people with forms of neck pain, and many people in Australia seek relief from neck pain by visiting a neck pain chiropractor. By seeking chiropractic care for neck pain, individuals can find relief from their symptoms and improve their overall function and mobility. It's important to note, however, that not all neck pain is the same, and different types of neck pain may require different treatment approaches. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your specific condition.
